Every month the song/dance/activity will change. Many of the songs will be from my Recordings. Please print the page and do the activity with your child. Teachers may print the page to use with their classes. If you have questions, Contact Me.

This lively movement song will have everyone moving their bodies, so be sure you have space to safely do it! I encourage the children to find a "Safety Zone": Stand with arms outstretched to the sides and slowly swing arms helicopter-style. If you can touch another child, you must move to a safer place! It works very well with pre-schoolers and older children. For Toddlers, just place them in a Safety Zone!
Once you learn this song, add your own movements, or solicit movement ideas from the children. This is a song they can take ownership of quite quickly. And remember – adults should be trying to do all the movements, too we model participatory behavior for our children!
Lyrics: | One finger, one thumb keep moving, keep moving, keep moving Two fingers, two thumbs keep moving, keep moving, keep moving 2 fingers, 2 thumbs, 2 arms keep moving, keep moving, keep moving 2 fingers, 2 thumbs, 2 arms, 2 feet keep moving, keep moving, keep moving 2 fingers, 2 thumbs, 2 arms, 2 feet, sit down/stand up, keep moving, keep moving, keep moving |
Movements: | This is pretty easy – just do what the lyrics tell you to do! For "chase the flies away", I sweep both hands/arms grandly from side to side. It's important to keep these movements BIG – teach children to detach their arms from their bodies – please demonstrate with BIG movements! |
Age Range: 2 – adult!
Purpose: Large motor movements, listening and following instructions, safely sharing space with others, and FUN
EXTENSION: "One Finger, One Thumb" goes nicely with 2 previous SOTM's: "Going on a Picnic" and "Shoo Fly". Fall is still a great time for picnics, so plan one with your child! Or take your class outdoors for snack time. OR – have a Teddy Bear Picnic – and bring along your favorite stuffed animal!
