Down I Flop!

Listen to the whole song on Baloney! or hear it here:

This catchy tune in a minor key is great for teaching and practicing skills: clapping, stamping, jumping, running – and whatever skills you add to the song! It's yet another "Zipper Song" – just zip in a new movement and repeat. Children will catch on quickly.

Use it with or without the cd – it's a winner!

Lyrics:

Clapping, clapping, see me clapping
Clapping, clapping, all day long!
Nobody knows I can clap so well
Nobody knows I can stand / so / still. (big pause)
Clapping, clapping, see me clapping
When I am tired, down... I .... FLOP!

Verses:
2. stamping
3. jumping
4. walking
5. running
6. tiptoe

Movement:

This is SOOO easy! Just do what the song tells you to do. Demonstrate clapping either on the beat (especially for 3's and younger) or off the beat, but be consistent! Remember, children follow your lead if you are able-bodied and you don't jump or run with them, some of the children will follow your lead. I'll say it again when fingers point and "people" say "We're raising a generation of couch potatoes with obesity issues," be able to say "NOT ME!"

NOTE: It is necessary to put safety first in active music. Please TEACH children to run in the same direction. I do it by having them walk, then jog, then run – stopping briefly between each tempo when introducing running for the first time. In successive activities, a reminder is all that's necessary. I ask my students, "What do we have to remember when we run?" They answer, "Don't bump into our friends, and everyone goes in the same direction." With younger 1's and 2's, I demonstrate several times before expecting them to remember these guidelines.

Age Range: 2 - 6 years old. That doesn't mean that children older and younger won't enjoy the song – I've even done "Down I Flop!" with senior citizens who had a blast doing all the motions!

Purpose: Gross motor skills, moving as individuals within a group, and following directions
