If you can't get to the ocean, here's a chance to explore it, talk about it, and create one at home or in the classroom. With one child, you can use pictures, drawings, or stencils to create the sea creatures you would like to put in your ocean. With a small group, you might take a piece of blue paper, and have the children use stickers or pictures to fill up the ocean as the creatures are sung – better yet, turn off the cd and sing it yourself with suggestions from the children. With a large group, I use a feltboard and felt sea creatures – see the resource below – each child having 2 different fish/animals to bring up and place on the feltboard as they are called. Sway in the waves during the verses.
Be sure to identify all the sea creatures before you begin, and you can encourage the children to help each other name them if someone forgets. I leave sharks for last, as they tend to get combative if they're on the board too early!
Should you have access to large sea shells, have the children listen to them - can they "hear the sea"?
